The key to success in life

In As Far As You Can See, You Can Go, gospel music legend James Bullard, now in his tenth decade of life, invites you on a journey. It is a memoir of some of the transformative stories of gospel music and the underlying key to everything. It is not so much a book about James Bullard but more about what God did through Him, one ordinary man who lived in integrity and obedience to One Extraordinary God, and, as they say, the rest is history. HIS Story, that is.

Introduction

The year was 1944, and I was a twelve-year-old boy in Atmore, Alabama, a little town just north of the Florida panhandle and about equal distance between Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Like many hot, humid days in southern Alabama, I would often lie in the shade of the pecan orchard, staring up through towering branches at the blue sky that stretched endlessly beyond our little town.

One particular day, lying in the quiet, the only sounds being the distant chatter of children playing and the whisper of the wind through the great trees, I heard a voice. It wasn’t my mom’s voice or any of my friends, it was just a voice, and I heard it clearly, speaking directly to me. “As far as you can see, you can go.” And that was it. I lay there puzzled, but there was no denying it. I didn’t know at the time if it was the voice of God or what, exactly, but I grabbed onto that vision as a child from Alabama, and God has been faithful in my life to help me see more than what was right in front of me. It enabled me to envision greatness and, yes, to go and see His mighty hand do things in and through my life that no one would have believed, even if they had been told ahead of time!

The LORD replied, “Look around at the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it. (Habakuk 1:5 NLT)

This book is about how God used me as His vessel to spread His Word through gospel music. It has been my passion from my youth both to be used by God and to bring Him glory through the gifts He has given to me — from Atmore, Alabama, to the ends of the earth!

We have the unique opportunity to take a journey back with James Bullard to where it all started, and watch as God used an ordinary man to do extraordinary things. Now in his tenth decade of life, God has seen fit to do one more miracle through this selfless servant — he has given James the recollection of events in minute detail: people, places, events, and stories — and we can read them today as if we were there, standing beside him on cold Cleveland streets, on stage at the Apollo, or in the wings of the sanctuary with the BOS Singers as Dr. MLK Jr. got the attention of the world.

(His impact on the industry) … was monumental, but you would never know it because he was always behind the scenes. He led, guided, and directed everything in the industry for many years.

Rane Boone-Franklin

Mr. Bullard pretty much connected the gospel world and the business world, building a bridge between the two. James came along, built the bridge, and then crossed over to help both sides.

Larry Roberts

James provided an umbrella for a lot of up-and-coming guys who really wanted to get into the art of music. With Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s, James brought a network of people together. James was totally one to admire. James would put together something and it would be a first-class act. There will never be another James Bullard.
